The Mensa International FAQ will answer your organizational questions.
Do you have to be a Mensa member to chat on or enjoy #Mensa?
NO! Many of our regular members donīt even belong to Mensa (though most could if they wanted to). A best guess is maybe 15% of our regulars are current, dues-paying members of Mensa.
So, do you guys think you're smarter than the rest of us?
This question gets asked at least once a night, frequently following a mass-join. Without any objective data this question is basically unanswerable. However, since the author of this query invariably thinks he or she has not only asked an original (and hilarious) question, the available evidence might be construed to prove that we're not only smarter, but also more well-adjusted and socially adept.
What does "Mensa" mean?
From the Mensa website, the word "mensa" means "table" in Latin. The name stands for a round-table society, where race, color, creed, national origin, age, politics, educational or social background are irrelevant. When the original Mensa society was created, the founders desired to use the Latin word "mens" for mind as the name for the society, but as there was a Mens magazine, elected to add the "a," and persisted in spite of the discovery that "mensa" is Mexican slang for a crazy woman.
I got kicked (or banned) simply for stating my opinion. Why?
No one gets kicked or banned for simply stating an opinion. Kicking is a warning, and banning is done for protection against channel disruption. If you were kicked and/or banned it is likely you were being abusive, disruptive, or just being a jerk. We welcome reasoned and intelligent debate, but flooding the channel, blatant name-calling, bigotry, or baiting will not be tolerated. Since this is mainly a conversational channel and many users are on featureless unix shell clients, color and sound codes are discouraged as a nuisance.
How do I become an Op?
|
Show up regularly in channel (and contribute).
|
Demonstrate a degree of maturity and humor.
|
Prove a minimum level of IRC technical savvy.
|
Never ask to become an Op. Ops-begging is deplored. |
Channel Operators (Ops) are indicated by the "@" before their name in channel. They handle the behind-the-scenes maintenance and cleaning chores that keep #Mensa a pleasant experience. It requires a serious investment of time and can be very tedious on occasion. Potential Ops are nominated by existing Ops. The nomination is seriously debated and then voted on by the current ops.
