re di =) re hi di oh fer crying out loud. I should go look at the mensa page hrmmm I guess I am not profound enough, I'm never quoted in these mensan logs ;-) you don't talk enough -- you're in at least one of the logs all 3 lines worth I think don't feel bad..me either oh dear, sp0. he's a first class troll in #unix as well yes - kj wasn't sure that log should go up; if there are objections it'll come back down ;P I thought it was a fair example of how #Mensa responds to trolls. Not representative, necessarily, but fair. I don't understand the preoccupation with IQ I don't think it's a preoccupation so much as a target point glo, only if you let it be i read the first log that went on the page. too long. i have a short attention... you're more secure than others di? ooooo beethoven I much prefer Bach it seems to me that's what it boils down to. some people need others to tell them they're smart. Nedved, low self-esteem some ppl see it as something to attack - anything perceived as different can be a target point to a mind organized in a certain way; haunted by conformity and uniformity no doubt ;P attempting to attack an arrogance I suppose glory, there's a public radio station out of sioux falls that you would dig, i'm sure. NPR affiliate, ned? they play classical music, but i have yet to hear anything that didn't directly involve a piano. yes it is I like the piano that couldn't be NPR then, they have much more talk than piano ;P it's too complex for me :) but I much prefer to be playing it not at all glo. they take a break from news between 2 and 3 to play more music. * glo^ is just beginning to learn to sense the 'beats' in a vibrating piano string; I can't claim I hear them, but I'm starting to sense them well, on the lower notes, there are three strings hit simultaneously they are never completely in tune with each other, so yes, you could probably hear a beat that's the higher notes. lowest bass, single strings; next bass group, two strings; treble range, three strings each di, you ever do the math of a vibrating piano string? it comes dimly to mind; I remember reading up on the pythagorean note progression actually I'm reading "The Seventh Dragon" by a piano tuner; small book, considerable discussion of ratios (including pythagoras) (the 7th dragon is the one which listens) can't say that i've heard of that reading a really bad book on number theory now. pythagoras worked out the overtones etc. possible from a vibrating string just read about the magnitude of infinite sets. whup, phone ringing aleph numbers makes one wish they knew more about music. them's them tempering aleph null, 1, etc =) tempering of scales is cool theory wise when i started to read that chapter, i thought it was hogwash. cute thing about the even temper, is that its a compromise all around hmm, remember reading about magnitude of Infinite sets on a Rudy Rucker book There are scales that are "foxier" than others due to the temper it made no sense until i read cantor's greatly simplified proof. Rudy Rucker is good. His SF is quite .. interesting yes..I enjoyed Invinity and the Mind. also the 4th dimension I liked his "Master of Space and Time" i've tried to stay away from the 4th dimension. don't know anyone there. well, he's not as long winded as say Dr. L. Forward this is true i heard a show on string theory the other day that blew my mind. Some authors feel the need to pad out their books with excess verbiage once they have told their story string theory is wild stuff used the phrase "god of gaps" and when i thought about it, it was one with the universe for a while. i was one, that is to say all theories are theories not reality but that particular one is something awesome. hmmm, I lost my "Infinity and the Mind" and I never got through it all foo i'll spend the rest of my life learning the math to understand it better, cause i find it so interesting. I have lost most of my math seems math is the basis toward everything I have not had much desire to re-learn it i'm with ya sister. I loved math though but it did not love me too bad they don't teach it from that perspective in school, eh? couldn't tell you the difference between a j-fet and bipolar transistor any longer. I loved the beauty of it $40k down the crapper. nedved, I could ;-) and a mosfet to boot extraordinarily elegent..and equally harsh..much like Unix, IMHO ;) i was telling avigail that i feel slighted. i very often don't see the beauty in math. i want to, but i can't. * Dianora- sighs hrmm, damned gateway STILL seems to be down time to update my web page I've been with my partner over 23 years as of today congrats! congrats di there. fixed. you don't look old enough for that to be the case. 23 years. hrm * Dianora- sighs that's not that long, actually when one thinks about it in the grand scheme of a life. long enough you haven't been alive 23 years sir LOL this is true We complete each others sentences now but..I try to put things in proportion. =) its quite odd which part of that did she type? :) heh funny you should mention that though.... we went out tonight with a friend of linda's and her SO hmmm, I only wish a relationship such as that...especially if it lasts 23+ years Data1, its not always been easy... as you can iamgine aye I'm sure it takes a great deal of maturity and understanding on both parts for one another I have several rucker books *sigh* going to have to go buy another one.. "software" "hardware" "wetware" heh =) hrmmm I forget which book it was in, but the "ice cream truck" I think that was in wetware hehe that ice cream truck made it into a pop song which? they're justified and they're ancient? (song that is) the ice cream truck that was used as the cover for the cryogenics for the computers used and they drive an icecream va-an for the super computers you got it ned JAM Were justified and were ancient hmmm, perhaps before my time. ;) no there's a place outside of cincinnati called ft. ancient. ned, cool i sing that song every time i drive across the bridge... ned, I am right about the song reference you think? don't know. never read the book. but i dug the song aye ditto i bought the cassette single. I heard that phrase, and I immediately thought of Rudy Rucker I think its in Wetware i have since lost the cassette single. * Data1 makes a mental note to pick up Wetware so who is this guy? sounds like a noble venture ;) he writes about number theory? anything rucker is noble, eh? ;) i was thinking about writing a book about it myself. the readers can come along with me as i try to get people to explain just what in the hell these authors mean. I've never seen him really write SF, quite honestly...but he wrote a wonderful book covering Infinity..in its various forms ;) which I've since lost. =) hehe.. first your book.. then my tape... something's fishy here Yes..I blame it on NT. ;) convenient scapegoat, eh? ;) that would imply that nt was somewhere near your book. that's true okay..not NT, but the evil MCSE books that I picked up for 10 dollars for the pair ;) they ate it * Data1 hurls the lot of them out the window 'cause you didn't pay any attention to them. they have feelings too. reminds me of that monty python thing at this point the bbc censors come in and stop this thread because it's just plain stupid. ahh yes..monty python..they've never done crap either ;) produced crap, rather the books got him forgot to supply an argument to /names ;) that's a bad thing (TM) /names hmmm... not a problem here :) bah, evil NT ;) that's your new isp? and mirc well..I assume they'll cancel my acct. on this ISP since I left rather rudely *shrug* I've got 2 backups ;) the problem i have trying to teach myself number theory is that the authors i tend to read make the assumption that there's already a fairly strong math foundation in place. that's simply not the case. Well, di..perhaps the (albeit short) discussion might get us a mention on the logs page, eh? ;) What kind of math background do you have? electronics math. simple calc and trig. Well..I would imagine that it requires the understanding of decently complex math to understand it. something like the adage about crawling before you fly, eh? ;) it can, but there must be a way to explain it that requires very little understanding i read albert's book on relativiy and it went down fine. hawkin's book was great too. those are rather complex theories, but they found a way to explain it to joe average. you understand the Lorentz Transformations used in deriving Relativity..hmmmm but not number? the formulas are rather straight forward yes, very deriving the E = mc^2 +constant is easy too far simpler than say bernoulli's (sp?) equation. ugh. Okay..granted..but still, the math could get hairy.. or heat equations those are whacky whacky functions then again, I haven't dealt with relativity since..oh..5 years ago ;) * glo^ is finally off the phone. the timing could hardly have been worse -- 100's of lines of scroll :P hehe serves you right for having friends irl * glo^ curtsies in the general direction of the great god Murphy speed of light is an invariant well. we think it's not just a good idea, it's the law ;) (lightspeed limit T-shirt) not so sure now, eh? Ned, no ;-) that show on string theory was really awesome. heh..we think is right ;) I like black holes that go boom in the night there's another good example. the guest on that show... some fella named greene explained that so that i cuold understand the basic ideas behind it. We once were sure it was..then again, most absolutes are found to be not so absolute eventually. ;) read a good book on an all-around overview of physics..pre-relativity, quantum and relativity..not to mention astronomical phenomenae ;) by Kip Thorne i really oughta get a book by this bertrand russel guy. he sounds interesting. a while back..."Black holes and Time Warps" I believe the name was *** ^Frode^ is frode@leker.i.portveien.to (Frode Stian Andersen) *** on channels: @#oper_takeover_group_were_simply_the_best! hehehe hi sheba greets hey ned :) new calculator upgrade for windows displays pi to 31 places. damned thing is more accurate than my 48gx that's just not right. bill gates will burn in hell. hehe...I don't suppose any of you ahve seen "Pi" the independant film, eh? no, but i sure wanted to I'd be interested in your takes of it. those who saw it i'm still waiting to see the white balloon. there's a film coming out of columbus here called snakes and arrows. if you like drums, the soundtrack might be something to look for. heh..I did find something interesting out today Independant films normally make a rental circuit of 11 months to a year before they come out to buy why? it's how they make their most money make more money that way? I don't think they even go out to theatres brb the drexel here in columbus is good for most new i-films. there used to be three of them in town. now there are two. the one in clintonville lost its lease and is now a drugstore. dianora, what is your background in electronics? early interest in it I earned an amateur radio license at age 16 i'm going to get back into it again one of these days. i've found that i miss it, believe it or not. you ham de va3db yah..i read on your page that you were a bit of a ham hehehe i've never been into rx'ing? is that what they call it? bah hell to each and every one of you lo-tek, why do you say that? All of hell, or just a select portion? atheist here. no use for your hell, but thanks anyway. strikes me as an appropriately curmudgeonly sort of a greeting *** Dianora-d (db@bitch.operator.from.hell) has joined channel #mensa I've always wanted a scenic plot..one where I can sunbathe by the river styxx lol di LOL * Dianora-d whistles innocently * irishrose throws marshmallows at dia so, anyone thinking good thoughts? silly di, aren't you supposed to be keeping host spoofing from happening in hybrid-5? ;) yeah all my thoughts are toxic what was the name of the ferry-man on the river styxx? bob charon? ferry-man bob charon just like the pseudo-planet =) charon his boat with the damned. i'd have to look it up. from whose mythology does he come from anyway? greek, I believe hrm. acheron, lethe, styx. that's about it for hell-water isn't it? Charon. The hell-dog. cerberus no, that was cerebrus cerebus cerebrus right the three headed dog What was Charon, then? he was the ferryman err cerebrus evil typo demon Cerberus, yes. okay...going to go now and pay attention to other things..adieu Charon is Pluto's moon, but who is it "really"? http://www.pantheon.org/mythica/articles/c/charon.html Well said, Nedved. He's the fairy-man of the dead. if you called him a fairy to his face, he'd charge you double to ride in his boat. I'd not go to Hell, then. ferryman you would, but you'd swim did y'all see the onion article about the construction project to add a 10'th layer to hell, for ad-men and he would taunt you from the boat. No. I'd ride with Dante. He ends up in the right place. thought there were 666 layers to hell? must be a leftover from playing D&D. Nerd. more than that. i taught a class babysitting 101 parents loved it 'cause it freed up their saturday mornings. Nerd^2? so their children were consorting with orcs and demons... as long as they could get to the bank.... Nerd^googol.
